This page lists some of the books I've read and enjoyed. I still haven't
come up with a good format for this page, but oh well...
- Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid - an excellent book about
a variety of topics. Of course it talks about mathematics, art, and music
(as the title suggests), but also it's also about philosophy, psychology,
physics, and ultimately, about human conciousness. What can I say, it's great.
Check out
Mårten's GEB Page.
- Metamagical Themas: Questing for the Essence of Mind and Pattern - a
compendium of articles written by Hofstadter.
- The Mind's I: Fantasies and Reflections on Self and Soul - a collection
of fun essays about the meaning of self and conciousness edited by Hofstadter and
Daniel Dennett.
- Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental
Mechanisms of Thought - some papers by Hofstadter and the people he worked with
at Indiana University and the University of Michigan. This give some details about
the kind of research that he has been doing. Take a look at the
Fluid Concepts and Creative
Analogies webpage.
- Le Ton beau de Marot: In Praise of the Music of Language - a little different
from his other books, this one is about translation, poetry, and literature.
- microserfs - a brilliant and hilarious book about some people who
work at Microsoft. A must-read for any computer science student.
- Generation X
- Shampoo Planet
- Life After God
- Neuromancer - the classic "cyberpunk" book
- Pattern Recognition
- All Tomorrow's Parties
- Idoru
- Count Zero
- Burning Chrome
Others...
- Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
- The Dancing Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav -
An overview of modern physics and the philosophy that comes out of it. Attempts to
show how recent events in physics are in tune with eastern philosophies. I'll have
to read more about both to get anywhere on the issue.
Any books you'd recommend?
